A Simple Upgrade for Professional-Looking Videos

Informative videos can strengthen connections with current clients and build trust with potential prospects. But missing the mark on professionalism can have the opposite effect.

With at-home video equipment readily available, it can be easy to produce videos in-house, but there is one component that can make the difference when it comes to the end result.

For advisors filming in their offices, it’s assumed a few elements are already in place:

  • Strong lighting: This could be either natural light, if you have a space with lots of windows, or one of the inexpensive circle lights popular among YouTubers.
  • Sound check: Professional sound equipment usually isn’t necessary, but this is something you may reconsider if your camera picks up any kind of echo or other unwanted sound.
  • Camera: Many online videos are shot on smartphones, and effectively so. Still, some IAs opt for a specialty camera and tripod.

With decent audio and visuals as your starting place, you may feel there’s still something missing from your videos. What we’ve found is that, most often, it’s the background.

Swapping out your background, even if you have a professional office space behind you, can do the following:

  • Enhance the atmosphere: Taking control of the background allows you to get rid of awkward shadows and unpleasant tones.
  • Improve the composition: You don’t have to worry about dull or distracting items behind you.
  • Add flexibility: When choosing your filming location, you don’t have to consider what’s behind you—just go where the light is best.
  • Promote your logo: This gives you the option of showcasing your logo through the whole video.

Most video editing programs will allow you to customize your background. Try standing in front of a blank, monochromatic wall for a cleaner effect when you add in your new background.

For the advisors and firms we produce videos for, we typically add a customized background featuring the logo, smoothen transitions, add graphics, and frame it all with a polished intro/outro. Reach out to us if you’re considering upgrading your video series or launching a new one.
